While we are sheltered at home, we can express our gratitude visually towards essential workers and those on the front lines, who are out and about, caring for the rest of us.

This is a great activity to do together with those who live with you- your flatmates, family members, etc.

You’re invited to express your appreciation on a street-facing window, using the following easy steps.

  1. Decide who you’d like to express your gratitude towards (health workers, first responders, supermarket and pharmacy workers, sanitation workers, mail deliverers, etc).

  2. Identify the best window and consider the eye level of passersby. This will define the range of your work space.

  3. Design your window display: Think creatively about what you would like to say and what images or objects can help you say it. Think of it as telling a story. You can use these tips from designers of retail window displays.

  4. For drawing or writing directly on the glass, you can use dry-erase (whiteboard) markers or “window markers” or liquid chalk markers (make sure in advance that they are water soluble!)

  5. Remember that any lettering should be readable from the outside, not from the inside of the window. If you cannot write backwards (or reach the window from the outside), use our prepared template below for lettering and use the markers for designs and decorations, not words.

  6. Use three dimensional objects to hang or show in front of the window as well. This could include objects that reflect the work of those you’re aiming to thank.

  7. Consider lighting, to enhance the display.

  8. Once you’ve completed your display, be sure to take a pic and share it on social media, using our hashtag: #gratitude5780
